Membership Requirements

Volunteer Firefighters

 205.5  VOLUNTEER FIREFIGHTER

Members who are classified as "Volunteer" will use the When to Work website or mobile app to schedule duty shifts. These shifts will be made available by the scheduling manager no later than the 21st day of the previous month. Members will be able to schedule shifts that they are qualified for on a first-come, first-served basis. It is imperative that members sign up before the schedule is finalized. The only positions that will receive duty crew stipends will be the Officer (A), Engineer/Operator (D), Firefighter (B), and Firefighter (C) positions. At least one paid employee will occupy one of these positions.

Volunteer members are required to work 48 hours per month. These can be accomplished in one (1) 48-hour shift, two (2) 24-hour shifts, one (1) 24-hour shift and two (2) 12-hour shifts, or four (4) 12-hour shifts. Members can sign up for non-stipend eligible (Firefighter E and Firefighter F positions) to ensure they are meeting the 48 hour requirement, but they will not receive stipends for those shifts.

Should any conflicts arise, and the member is unable to work a scheduled shift, they should contact the scheduling manager to attempt to resolve it. It is ultimately the members responsibility to find coverage for a shift that they were scheduled for.

Volunteer firefighters should make every attempt to avoid calling off their scheduled shifts, as it puts extreme constraints on the operational readiness of the department. Should a member need to call in sick, notifications should be made as early as possible; no later than 2 hours before the scheduled shift (preferably the night before). Call offs made after this, will be counted as "no-call no-shows". Call offs occurring more than once per month will be considered a pattern of behavior inconsistent with efficient operations of the department and may be grounds for suspension.
